Mahjong 101: Learn to Play American Mahjong! Have you been curious about Mahjong but aren’t quite sure where to start? Or maybe you’ve watched others play and thought it looked like fun, but the tiles, cards, and terminology seemed a little overwhelming? This class is for you! Mahjong 101 introduces you to the basics of American Mahjong using National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules. No previous experience is needed. We’ll walk through the game step by step, so by the end of class, you’ll understand how to play. What We’ll Cover • Getting to Know the Tiles: Learn the suits (Bams, Craks, and Dots), Winds, Dragons, Flowers, and Jokers, along with the terminology you’ll hear around the table. • Understanding the NMJL Card: Learn how to read the annual card, recognize the different hand categories, and choose a hand to play. • Setting Up the Game: Learn how to build the walls, deal the tiles, and get the game started. • The Charleston: Practice the tile-passing rounds that begin each game. • Playing the Game: Learn how turns work, when you can call a discarded tile, how exposures work, and when and how to use Jokers. • Hands-On Practice: Put what you’ve learned into action with guided games and plenty of help along the way.
